Barasoain Weekly Reflection for 1 – 7 October 2017
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
“Of all the months in a year, October has been my favorite. I had many experiences here both pleasant and unpleasant but still I consider this month to be one of the best.” said of an old lady from a video in the popular website Youtube. Unfortunately, those treasures that she has may not stay for long.
“I’ll hold to it as long as I can.” said by a man in the following scene. Those words broke my heart.
These people have one thing in common: They have Alzheimer’s Disease, which causes disintegration of the neurons in the brain causing it to degenerate and eventually end up in death. Memories are attacked first before other parts of the brain, causing one to lose their memory.
What makes the story interesting is that their memories are lost forever: The very thing that they had been everything that shaped them, they good and bad moments, moments that they cherish are fading away. Even their journals will not bring their memories back as they won’t be able to make anything out of it. It may be the things that make them happy or sad but now gone.
We are living in our bodies that are frail, fragile and prone to death. But one day, I know God will give us renewed strength, with all our loved ones and on that day, no tears will shed, no disease will cripple us and nothing will harm us.
Our experiences shape us, our memories mold us but God will renew us.
